A mainstay of the Boston restaurant scene, Sonsie has been around for as long as I can remember and most certainly a place I have frequented throughout my many years of being a Boston resident.

As a side note, Sonsie was the first bar I ever went to alone when I first moved to Boston.  I transferred here with my job in 1998 and ended up staying in a corporate apartment on Newbury Street for a month or so. The apartment made me weep to go home – I was so lonely.  It was the saddest time of my life.  I lived in a leopard print apartment, seriously, leopard print walls, leopard print bed, smoke glass top tables with leopard ornaments, and a painting of a leopard on the wall.  It did have a Jacuzzi bath but that just didn’t make up for my sadness.  It was the ugliest apartment ever!!  So anyway, I went to Sonsie, which was right across the street one night alone for dinner – I just had to get out of the apartment.  Everyone was so nice to me and I ended up loving the place and loving Boston. I went back there many many times after that on my own until I found some friends J

I am huge fan of Sonsie for brunch and I an even bigger fan of their Eggs Benedict.  I truly believe it is the best in the city.

The other night I went to Sonsie for a quiet dinner with my friend, Laurie.  We had stopped by the new Capital Grille first but it was so packed we couldn’t even get close to the bar.  Sonsie popped into my mind so we decided it was a good plan to go there instead. Everyone is always so accommodating and welcoming at this establishment.  It is always nice to go back.

We started our evening with a bottle of Cote du Rhone to share and looked at the menu.  One of my favorite appetizers on the Sonsie dinner menu is the Vegetable Spring Rolls.  They have been on there forever and my hope is that it stays that way.  We ordered a portion to share.  The spring rolls are veggie fresh, crunchy, tasty and have a super kick when you add the dipping sauce.  A fantastic appetizer to share or for a light meal for one!  If you wrap the roll in the lettuce watch out for the sauce dripping out onto your chin and eventually your clothes – that did not happen to me, honestly.

I have tried many things on the entrée menu from the pastas to superb pizzas and amazing seafood.  This time I picked something a little different and went with the Mee Krob and I am glad I did.  It was soooooo good.  If you like spicy, you will like this wonderful dish of flavors.  Soft Thai Noodles with bean sprouts, full of shrimp, chicken and pork.  No matter how much I tried I couldn’t even make a dent in this dish.   I have heard that bigger men have tried without success – a quote from the bartender himself.  The Mee Krob is now on my favorites list!

Laurie ordered the Mesclun Salad with Goat Cheese.  This was a very pretty salad to behold full of fresh greens wrapped in a circle of cucumber.  Laurie said it was a little too heavy on the EEVO so next time she would ask for dressing on the side.  With the added goat cheese (fried), slightly crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside it added a lot more substance to the salad and was perfect for a light entree.

Our dessert was to finish the wine, savor the quiet time and enjoy our catch up.

All in all, a nice mid-week evening of dinner with a friend and Sonsie staff who check in on you often to make sure everything is going well – and it was.

I might have to go back again for brunch on Sunday!
