Port Elderflower Cocktail

Back in the old days of leisurely dining out 😉, I have on occasion enjoyed slowly sipping a silky mildly sweet glass of aged Tawny Port for an after dinner drink.

About this Recipe

When Stacey (my cooking/baking buddy) first made this cocktail I realized every ingredient is alcohol so that is exactly what I thought it would taste like. Not at all. This drink is leisurely and sweet but not too sweet. It is the perfect aperitif.

Just recently I was making one of my Weightwatchers (yes I am constantly on WW) faves of Chicken Marsala (just 2 points) and realized I had no Marsala cooking wine left. I had already prepped everything so immediately had to improvise. Alexa was on the case giving me substitutes for Marsala Wine. Once she finished sharing that Port would be good substitute she offered up some other things I may like such as Port cocktails.

This got me intrigued so I started researching cocktails containing Port. I found one that piqued my interest with just three ingredients of Rum, Port and Elderflower Liqueur. Sounds like it wouldn’t work right?  Well, you could not be more wrong… seriously.

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces of Rum – I used Bacardi

  • 2 ounces of Port – I used Sandeman Reserve which gave it this rich dark color

  • 1.5 ounces St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur

Stacey and I have been embarking on making cocktails and I have to say we are a little bit more miss than hit of late. I cant even talk about the Banana Daquiri we made. To say it was disgusting is an understatement… it tasted like children’s medicine! I suggested the Port Elderflower Cocktail and my friends we LOVED it. In fact, we have both separately made it multiple times since.

Step by Step Instructions

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice
Add all the ingredients
Shake until ice cold
Pour mixture into your favorite small cocktail glasses

I also tried it with my favorite Luxardo Maraschino Cherries and loved it.

Stacey’s cocktail used Dow’s Tawny Port which seems to have given this fab cocktail more of a reddish hue.
