Last Friday at the end of a very long work week I organized a wine and cheese tasting with the guys from Bacco Wine & Cheese for my office.  The event was a great success and I was in heaven enjoying two of the things I like to indulge in – wine and cheese!

I am a big fan of sparking wines.  I especially love champagne and more recently I have been finding myself trying a lot of Cava wines –Spanish sparking wine.  I like the lightness of them and the fact that the bubbles are a little more delicate.  For our tasting we were trying the Segura Viudas Cava Brut Reserva.

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva, created from a blend of reserve and non-vintage wines, is clean and delicate, yet rich in flavor. A cuvée of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo grapes grown in the renowned Alt Penedès region of Spain, the wine is vinified according to méthode champenoise technique and is aged in the bottle for up to three years.”

The cava is a very light, almost a pale straw color, with faint bubbles.  At first nose I get a lot of fresh grape with a hint of citrus.  After a minute I also get red apple.  When I first sipped the Cava I could really taste the citrus, it is fresh and subtle, yet still full in flavor.  The more I tasted the Cava, the more I enjoyed this little sparkling wine.  It is not too sweet or too dry.  The Cava tastes very fresh, crisp and well balanced.  For the evening we paired it with a Spanish Mahon cheese, which was rich and salty and a surprisingly excellent accompaniment to the Cava.  A perfect wine to start the evening off.

This wine is a great gift for when you pop over to a friend’s house and want to bring something fun to drink. A great price at approximately $8.99 and perfect to kick the evening off I did last night with my friends
