My friend Sarah sent me a wonderful gift of wine while I was in Kansas City for the holidays. She asked the KC wine merchant what they recommend for someone who loves wine and they suggested the Tolaini Legit Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. Having never tried this wine before and at 94 points, I was legit eager to indulge.
The first thing you notice is the cool label, which is of the celebrated jazz musician, Thelonious Monk and is a photo from one of his most famous concerts in Italy. Apparently, a collaboration was made between the families and the label was created. Lauren and I did this review together and we soon found out it makes perfect sense for this wine.
This wine is as dark a ruby red as you can get. We were immediately drawn into the aroma of sweet tobacco and oak, reminiscent of walking through an old tannery smelling of sandalwood, old leather and oil. The initial taste is suck your cheeks in dry, dry, dry and interesting. The second taste brings some tantalizing mild sweetness around the edges with hints of dark chocolate covered black cherries and vanilla. The wine continues to open up with seriousness like a good mystery novel you can’t put down and getting and better with each page turn (sip).
Like jazz, which for me is a love/confusing relationship, Legit has a melody that doesn’t make sense but seems to just work. This wine is ‘legit’ good.
If you like heady, dry reds, you will love this wine. My rating…
