28 Degrees is apparently the ideal temperature for a martini. Is that true? I don’t know.
While many surbanites flock to 28 Degrees late night for its uber cool restaurant clubby vibe with sophisticated décor of white curtains sectioning off the restaurant and loungy black leather booths, we decided to go there for some patio dining on a gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon.
Located in a brick building at One Appleton Street the patio is nestled nicely on the corner of Appleton and Tremont with low seating and surrounded by green hedge rows. The area hosts a mix of table and chairs and low comfy sofas so that you can sit back and happily enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a martini, a wine or cappuccino. A complete opposite scene to the inside, which is more disco than disco nap.
It was about 4pm so we thought it was a perfect time for a cocktail. Kathleen ordered a Rose wine, her drink of choice in the summer months, while I decided on something a little more fun with a Pimm’s Cup. My drink was exceptionally cucumber heavy with a fresh citrus tang and quite tasty indeed.
The menu is small and intriguing with a number of small plates worthy of sharing such as Burrata, Crab Salad and Pork Shumai and a nice selection of pizza. As we were looking for some bites to share we started with the Burrata. Burrata seems to be making a big splash these days on menus. I am seeing it everywhere. Made from the mozzarella and fresh cream, I honestly cannot think of anything that could be wrong with this appetizer. Slopped onto crusty toast points the Burrata was the perfect summer cool bite… fresh, creamy, heavenly good.
The arugula salad, which accompanied the Burrata was so fresh and tasty we decided to order it as a main dish to go with a pizza. The Arugula was biting with firm fresh mushrooms and sweet sharp red onion mixed through and drizzled with the perfect amount of Truffle Oil.
As well as the Arugula (off menu) salad we also ordered the Tomato, Basil and Mozzarella Pizza. Thin crust with a very spicy tomato sauce base. Definitely to my liking but a little too spicy for Kathleen. I love spice and this had an excellent kick. I think I may have eaten the whole pizza by myself.
28 Degrees is so fun for patio dining in the Summer. No pressure to move on, nicely attentive waitstaff and a menu that lends itself lots of sharing with friends.
