I visited my friend, Rob the other day to pick up some photos but also so that we could have dinner and a catch up.  Our last dinner was with Michael Silacci of Opus One so we desperately needed to download, which we have not had a chance to do.

We were trying to think about where to go when I remembered the Scotch Eggs from The Gallows and suggested we go there.

The restaurant was relatively quiet but the bar area was packed with drinkers and diners.  We opted to wait it out for a seat at the bar and we didn’t have to wait long.

Ordering a glass of Gruner for me and the “Champagne of Beers”, Miller High Life for Rob, we looked at the menu.   The menu offers a selection of burgers, seafood entrees, small bites and sides and what I believe is one of their signature dishes – the fries of simple, summer and out of control. The couple next to us were trying the out of control and they looked exactly that and delicious.  For this evening, I was looking for small bites and something a little lighter, except for the Scotch Egg of course.

We started with the #1 Tuna Poke to share.  This dish was outstanding, tasty and full of texture and color.  For something so simple, it was fantastic.  Can you tell I am fan?  The tuna was sushi grade perfect, the mouse melon (baby cucumber) and something I have never tasted before, added a super crunch. The seaweed salad was scrumptious. An all around fantastic dish.

After the tuna we both then ordered some additional small bites each.  I ordered the Scotch (Scottish) Egg and the Gulf Shrimp Ceviche.  Rob, the special of buttermilk fried chicken taco and fried jalapenos.

My Scottish Egg was just what I wanted.  They are like a full cooked breakfast in a small bite.  Soft boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, rolled in bread crumbs and fried.  Honestly, how good does that sound?  For me it was so good and did remind me a little bit of home.

My shrimp crevice was nice and fresh but a little too vinegary for me.  With the heavily salted chips it did work quite well together but for me needed to be a little lighter and not as sharp.  Rob thoroughly enjoyed his dishes.  He didn’t even share L

During the evening (a Wednesday), the restaurant filled up as did the bar.  There were lots of people hovering for seats in the bar area but we were sticking around for a little longer to enjoy our drinks, take in the fun vibe and enjoy each others company… oh and another glass of wine.

The Gallows is a great, local bar and restaurant that offers good food, a comfortable, easy atmosphere and friendly knowledgeable staff, and it would seem a location for Match dates as the couple next to us were so obviously on a blind date.  I think he liked her but it was not being reciprocated… her body language was screaming “don’t come near me!”

Another fun night with my friend and wonderful dining companion, Rob.
