I absolutely love movies. There are whole days when I just hunker down for a rainy movie Sunday on my comfy sofa, lots of tea and biscuits and I browse through On Demand for something I have not seen before or missed at the movies.
One of the movies I watched most recently was “The Ghost Writer” with Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan – as well as a huge British named cast. I am not even sure if this movie ever hit the cinemas? Maybe because the Director was Roman Polanski? Who knows but it looked intriguing so I gave it a whirl.
This movie was so utterly consuming and I have to say a little confusing in parts. A former Prime Minister of the UK, Adam Lang, played by Pierce Brosnan has asked someone to write his memoirs – “A Ghost Writer”, played by Ewan McGregor, and never named throughout the whole movie, after his last ghost writer was found dead.
The plot thickens when the Prime Minister is charged with war crimes for torture in Iraq. This movie is probably quite close to home for the real former British PM, Tony Blair. While the PM returned to the UK to try and defend himself, the writer was digging up more and more mystery surrounding the PM’s life and rise into politics.
There were so many twists and turns my head was spinning – very Hitchcock-esq. Nevertheless, I found the movie irresistible to watch, even if I did have to rewind it a number times. The whole movie was filmed in Martha’s Vineyard in the winter, which added to the dark and gloomy cinematography. I feel like I could watch it many times and find something new every single time. Superbly acted, brilliantly cast and I think a must see for anyone who likes a bit of a mystery. I would recommend if you watch this movie always pause if you have to step away – you will get completely lost, or maybe that was just me?
