I made some hearty Turkey Meatballs and needed an equally hearty wine to pair with my dinner.  Well, I didn’t need the wine, I wanted the wine.

While in Vermont the other week I stopped in New Hampshire on the way home for some tax-free wines to stock up my little wine rack.  One of those wines was the Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin 2009.  Let me share my thoughts…

On the nose this Zin is oaky, peppery and has an aroma of dark chocolate spiced with bitter coffee.  It’s actually quite complex on the palate and I had to shut my eyes for a moment and take a few sips to get everything right in my head.  Very smooth and velvety and tastes like dark, sweet chocolate with syrupy cherries. Doesn’t sound so good but I loved the heady richness of this wine.  On drinking more it becomes very jammy and opens up with aniseed and blossoms with rich berry fruits.  This is a full-bodied zin with a warm long finish.

A lovely find at a wonderful price and a wine I will be buying more of this Fall and Winter!
