Last weekend was the Boston Wine Expo.  In previous year’s I was a wine ambassador for this super wine event but this year I was a guest of a friend and fellow Boston blogger Rob of BosGuy.  This took me completely off the hook to be on point for taking photos, asking lots of question, tweeting, instagraming and ultimately writing about the event.  So, I relaxed and tasted wine to my heart’s content.  By 2pm I had to leave and get some proper food.

Oak & Rowan on a quiet Saturday afternoon

Rob suggested Oak + Rowan in Fort Point Channel, which is a restaurant I have wanted to try for a few months now.  There is a lot I want to share about this cool newcomer to the South Boston scene but for now I only want to talk about their phenomenal salmon burger.

Let me start with saying I love the strong flavor of salmon and this burger beautifully combines a pattie of finely chopped salmon with a coolly fresh cucumber remoulade sitting between a bun, which seemed to be brushed with a sweet oil.  Whatever it was, it just worked.  On the side, I had fries and while there is so argument about how crispy delicious they were, let me tell you about the slaw, which is not a garnish everyone talks about but I must.  The jalapeno in the slaw gave it a lovely smooth kick; the cumin knocked this simple side addition to a karate kick level.  I even had to ask the waiter to confirm it was cumin, which seemed like an unusual spice for coleslaw.  It made it Fab Dish Friday worthy!

I followed my burger, fries and slaw with a little bowl of vanilla bean ice cream.

I will be heading back in a few weeks for dinner and really looking forward to sharing more about the restaurant itself as well as menu.
