About this Recipe

Instead of just having my evening glass of wine one night last week, I was having a rare moment of craving something sweet. I was wondering what would help this craving when I remembered a recipe I came across a while ago that combined wine and my need for chocolate. It was time to try it out.

What I got was a warming evening cocoa with a naughty side.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips.  I used Godiva

  • 3/4 cup dry red wine

  • 1/2 cup milk. I used skim

  • 1/2 cup half and half
    Pinch of salt

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    Orange peel, to zest (optional)

At the end of my work day, I might do a little workout, I make dinner, pour a glass of wine, and then I make for the couch for an hour or so with whatever bingeworthy TV I am into at the moment. This past week was the fourth season of The Crown. I have to tell you Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher was creepily amazing.  She completely embodied her entire character and mannerisms.  Now I have to wait another two years for the next season!

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Combine the chocolate chips, wine, milk, half-and-half, and sugar (if using), in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.

Step 2

Heat, stirring constantly about 10 mins, until chocolate chips are melted and the mixture is hot.

Step 3

Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and salt. Pour into mugs and serve.  Add some sugar if you like it super sweet and even whipped cream if you want to make it into a full dessert drink.
