I was alerted to the fact that today is National Pi Day.  Why they have a National Pi Day, I have absolutely no idea and I am even not sure I actually care.  Now that I truly think about it, I really really don’t care.  I was, however, intrigued by a little email that came into my inbox with an invite to “satisfy your sweet tooth while feeding your inner mathematician, with a slice of pie.”  What was even more appealing was that the slice of pie was only $3.14.  And, for those that don’t know this… 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of π (pi) in the decimal form.  Of course, I knew that!

BiB (Beacon Hill Bistro) is located in the shi shi Beacon Hill area of Boston on Charles Street.  I have been a few times for dinner and have always been pleasantly surprised by their cuisine. I often forget its there and should try to remember more often.  This morning my mind was focused on getting a slice of pie for $3.14 J

So, for breakfast this morning, rather than my usual of grab a coffee on the way into work, sit at my desk and eat cereal from the office kitchen, if I haven’t thrown it across the floor or dropped it on myself, I decided to ask a couple of friends to join me for a slice of pie for $3.14 at Beacon Hill Bistro.

Upon arrival, our friend, Jessy was already seated and happily eating a slice of apple pie.  Apparently, she was starving and couldn’t wait!  Both Laurie and I sat down and were given a menu for breakfast from the waiter who also offered us coffee.  The coffee was great by the way.  I love strong coffee and they offer a very rich dark blend, which was very much to my liking.  I had three cups.

I had no idea they did breakfast, but I suppose it makes sense as it is also a hotel.  The menu offers lots of options from the healthy, fresh fruit and granola to lots of egg dishes such as Eggs with Crispy Chicken Hash and Smoked Salmon Omelet to Waffles and Pancakes.  I was staying on track with wanting a slice of pie.  I decided to go for the apple pie as the pear pie had cinnamon in it, and a side of fruit salad to make me feel better about myself.  Laurie decided on scrambled eggs and toast.  I have to say eating pie for breakfast was a rare and delicious treat.  It did feel a little strange and of course didn’t set my day up well for healthy eating after that.  The pastry was soft and crispy on top and the apples were just sweet enough.  I was thinking it may have been fabulous with some ice cream but wouldn’t that be so weird for breakfast… or would it?

With the friendly waistaff, quiet, relaxed atmosphere, and classical music playing in the background, I couldn’t think of a lovelier, more unrushed way to spend a Monday morning before getting into the office… and there in lies the rub… it was a Monday morning!  In fact, it took all my willpower to not just take a jaunt down Charles Street for some window shopping instead of going to work!

National Pi Day

“Pi Day is a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi).  Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (or 3/14 in month/day), since 3, 1 and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. In 2009, the US House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day, which is now ccelebrated by math enthusiasts around the world.”
