Sequoia Grove Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Bench Reserve 2021
Sequoia Grove is like my Napa home base. I visit so often, they probably recognize my silhouette coming up the driveway. And who could resist? Their wines cover everything from a fun with friends, porch-worthy Rosé to Cabs made for hibernation-level nights on the sofa in chilly Chicago. Today’s focus: the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Bench Reserve.
This one pours out a rich, deep purple, with aromas of ripe cherry and cassis that welcome you in like an old friend. The first sip? Silky and smooth—just enough romance to make you feel like you’re in a vintage rom-com, minus the sappy dialogue. Then comes the finish, with a hint of maple syrup and dark sweet chocolate, leaving a lasting impression as if it’s just given a charming “goodnight kiss” to your taste buds.
Every sip just gets a little better, like a favorite song you can’t stop replaying. And by the end, it’s as if Gene Kelly himself is giving a wink from the glass, urging you back for another round. 🍷
This wine would be great paired with Steak, Lamb or a Tomato-based Pasta dish. Check out this recipe I posted of Baby Lamb Chops from many years ago.
Notes from the winery
This Cabernet opens with dark aromas of wild forest berries, blackberry, cardamon, and crushed granite with a hint of anise and sweet fresh tobacco. The palate is complex with flavors of juicy pomegranate, black cherry juice, savory herbs, and powdery dark chocolate. This is a rich, full-bodied Cabernet with a long dense finish and supple, silky tannins. Drink now or age 10 or more years. 94 Points, Decanter
