Hill Family Estate Origin 2022

Back in 2014, during one of my annual trips to Napa Valley, I stayed in the wonderful little town of Yountville—and that’s when I was introduced to the Hill Family Estate tasting room. After enjoying many of their wines (purely for research, of course), I immediately became a member.

Twelve years later, my love for Hill Family remains strong, and those annual trips to Yountville have turned into something even better: a genuine friendship with the entire Hill Family family. See you all again in May! ❤️

Now, let’s talk about what’s in the glass.

A dark wine that pours seriously… but with very happy vibes. On the nose, there are hints of ripe plums and playful vanilla. The first sip comes in heavy with dark berries, yet somehow feels silky and impossibly smooth—like a slow waltz you didn’t know you knew the steps to.

Picture it for a moment. This wine is a full-on Gene Kelly movie: equal parts tap, glide, and effortless charm.

It’s a gorgeous, insanely light-heavy wine—yes, an oxymoron, but stay with me. Light on the tongue, heavy on the palate, and completely unapologetic about it. How do you explain that? Simple…  Heavenly. 🍷

Worth noting: At around $60, this one lives on the pricier side of the shelf—but it earns its place. This is a clear-the-evening, light-a-candle, no-rushing kind of wine.

Food pairing: This wine would love baby lamb chops or a cozy mushroom risotto. Basically, anything that enjoys a slow dance and doesn’t mind being a little dramatic.

Movie pairing: Perfect for a lazy, cold weekend night with something classic and comforting—Singin’ in the Rain (obviously), Midnight in Paris, or any movie that makes you want to curl up, sigh happily, and pour another glass “just to be sure.”

Notes from the winery

Hill Family Estate’s “Origin” red wine is a Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, sourced from the family’s vineyards in appellations like Carneros, Oak Knoll, and Atlas Peak, showcasing the terroir of each site in a balanced, fruit-forward wine with notes of dark cherry, plum, and spice. The blend changes slightly by vintage, but it consistently represents the best of the estate’s diverse vineyard holdings, offering a complex and approachable red wine.
