Murder, $350,000 Wine, and a Syrah That Won’t Break the Bank
I was watching an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent last night, and once again, I was amazed at what people with serious money will do. In this one, a wine collector was murdered — as one is, apparently — and the central plot revolved around a $350,000 bottle of wine. Yes, you read that right. Three. Hundred. Fifty. Thousand. Dollars.
He held a tasting for a very exclusive crowd, and I couldn’t help but yell at my TV: “Are you people sipping it or sacrificing it to the gods?” I get that wine can be an investment, but honestly, I don’t think I could ever drink a wine that costs as much as a small house and truly enjoy it. Could you? I’d be too stressed to swirl.
So, let’s talk about a far more accessible (and drinkable) bottle instead — one that won’t require a security detail.
Enter: the 2008 Sequoia Grove Stagecoach Vineyard Syrah. It’s around $30 and a fantastic find. But a word of advice: don’t rush it. This wine needs to breathe. Let it open up and do its thing — you’ll be rewarded for your patience.
The first nose is rich and intriguing — think spicy coffee, dark berries, and a subtle whisper of tea leaves. On the palate, it’s silky smooth, with deep flavors of black cherries and chocolate. As it evolves, a lovely tobacco aroma sneaks in, followed by a spicy finish that lingers just enough. It’s decadent, delicious, and totally worthy of bringing to a dinner party if you want to impress without taking out a second mortgage.
I paired it with leftover Spicy Lamb Bolognese from the now dearly departed POPS (RIP), and the match was perfect. I’d also go for barbecue with this — anything hearty and bold enough to meet the wine where it is.
I will admit it was hard not to pour a second glass, but I practiced restraint and saved some for the next night. Spoiler: it was even better the second day. Like most good things, this wine rewards a little patience.
It may be a bit pricier than your everyday table wine, but trust me — it’s absolutely worth it.
