I do love a good Chardonnay—truly. And what better than a 2008 Cakebread Cellars? I picked up a couple of bottles on a trip to Napa (yes, I know, I sound like a broken record: “This one time, in Napa…”). But out of all the wines I brought home, I was most excited about my Chardonnays—especially this one.

I’d been saving it for a “special occasion.” And what’s more special than a solo Thursday night, curled up on the couch, watching Franklin & Bash and opening a bottle just for myself? No shame. No sharing. Just me and my wine.

The moment I uncorked it, I had to stop myself from sticking my nose right in the bottle. (I didn’t. But it was close.)

In the glass, it’s a beautiful light straw color—like early spring cornfields. The aroma is clean and fresh, surprisingly delicate for a Chardonnay. As it opened up, layers of citrus, apricot, and honeydew melon emerged. Green apple, pear—every sip brought a new fruit to mind. There’s only a whisper of butter and an even softer kiss of oak, which, for me, is perfection.

As it breathes, the complexity deepens, ending in a long, elegant finish. This wine is bright, balanced, and bursting with personality.

Can you tell I’m a fan? I love, love, love this wine. Save it for a celebration—or treat yourself on an ordinary Thursday. It’s worth it.

I paired this wine with Roasted Zucchini and Whole Wheat Pasta and it was fabulous.
