I met Barbara for brunch on Sunday at one of my all-time favorite spots: Sonsie on Newbury Street. I’d envisioned sitting outside, soaking up the sun in a breezy dress and flip-flops. Instead? Jeans, a raincoat, and indoor seating. June, where’s your warmth?

Still, Sonsie always delivers. It’s been a staple in Boston forever, and consistently nails it — good food, friendly service, and a cozy, stylish vibe that works for any occasion.

When I arrived, Barbara was already seated and I was warmly greeted and escorted over to join her. The staff is always so welcoming — smiles, cheerful “how are you todays,” and a genuine attentiveness that sets the tone. I ordered coffee (not quite Mimosa-ready), and Barbara went with tea.

Now, I happen to think Sonsie makes the best Eggs Benedict in the city, so my order was a no-brainer — with a little upgrade: smoked salmon. Barbara chose the Frittata with cauliflower, spicy sausage, ricotta, parsley, and potatoes.

As we waited, our cheerful waitress brought over Sonsie’s signature complimentary bread basket and a coffee refill. I was thrilled — I love their fruit bread with the soft, sweet icing on top. It’s so fresh and delicious that it’s dangerously easy to devour the whole basket before your actual meal arrives… which is exactly what happened. Neither of us could finish our entrees.

Bread basket: dangerously good.

My Eggs Benedict was everything I wanted — perfectly poached eggs with just the right yokey runniness, a salty, creamy hollandaise, and a side of crispy home fries. I was a happy (and very full) bruncher. Barbara was equally content with her frittata — hearty, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

Eggs Benedict – hollandaise, poached eggs, Canadian bacon, home fries, and (my addition) smoked salmon
Frittata – cauliflower, spicy sausage, ricotta, parsley, potatoes

Side note: Sonsie isn’t just a brunch spot. It’s also great for after-work cocktails, dinner with colleagues, or even a first date. The sidewalk seating is perfect for warm evenings — the floor-to-ceiling windows open fully to the street, making it ideal for people-watching on Newbury. No date? Grab a friend and enjoy the view anyway. Same vibe, fewer expectations.

All in all, it was a lovely, relaxing Sunday. Even with all the trendy new restaurants and bars popping up in Boston, Sonsie holds its own. Fun, vibrant, and timeless — it’s no wonder it still draws such a loyal crowd.
