Not sure if you know this, but when you sign up for a Mystery Meet event, you don’t find out where you’re going until 24 hours beforehand. Intriguing, right? I was especially curious about this one — the ticket was just $25, and the host was Christine from The Discreet Hedonist, so my interest was piqued.

Imagine my surprise when the email arrived: we’d be meeting outside on the Rose Kennedy Greenway for a tour of nine food trucks. Food trucks?! Did they know who I was? I don’t do food trucks. My first instinct was to cancel. I mean, 50 degrees, light rain, street food, no Cabernet in sight? Not exactly my idea of a dreamy night out.

But then I thought: what’s the worst that could happen? I leave after the first bite and retreat to a warm bar for a glass of wine? Not a terrible fallback. Rob bailed (wimp), but my friend Stacey stepped in.

We met just past the Chinatown gate, the start of the Greenway — a long stretch of parkland that runs up to the North End. I have to say, I was genuinely impressed by how much this area has improved. Beautiful green space, fun light installations, waterfalls, sculptures — and yes, food trucks.

Truck #1: BBQ Smith
We kicked off with iced tea and lemonade — a bit chilly for the weather, but refreshing. The drizzle had me grumbling, but bumping into familiar faces from previous Mystery Meets helped lift my mood. We were also handed some delicious roasted almonds. Okay, this might not be terrible after all?

Truck #2: Clover
One of Boston’s best-known trucks — organic vegetarian with a clever menu. I went with the rosemary fries (so good!), and Stacey chose the roasted carrots, which I found pretty tasty, though she wasn’t a fan.

Truck #3: Lefty’s Silver Cart
Highlight of the night! “The Figment” — fig jam, goat cheese, and truffle-dressed greens on a baguette. Absolutely dreamy. Possibly the best sandwich I’ve had in ages.

It dawned on me — this wasn’t your basic burger-and-dog circuit. The Greenway has a pretty selective application process for trucks, which encourages innovation and creativity. Love that.

Truck #4: Silk Road BBQ
This was a mini feast — Korean carrot salad, pulled pork with award-winning pomegranate BBQ sauce (yum), and BBQ chicken, which I didn’t love. We were also treated to a much-needed hot cup of coffee from Equal Exchange Free Range Café. Bless them.

Truck #5: Grilled Cheese Nation
Now we’re talking comfort food. Toasted cheese sandwich and a cup of slightly sweet tomato soup — perfect for a chilly night. Cozy and nostalgic.

Truck #6: Beantown Franks ‘n Spuds
The only hot dog cart on the Greenway. I skipped it (not a beef-eater), but others raved. At this point, I was getting seriously full. And we still had three trucks to go…

Truck #7: The Cupcake Cart
I chose a chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing — moist (ugh, that word) and absolutely scrumptious, though I couldn’t finish it. Stacey picked the vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. We swapped bites. Both were dangerously good.

At this point, I was beyond full, and there were still two trucks left.

Truck #8: Streatery
Okay fine, twist my arm. I gave in to a chicken kebab drizzled with lemon juice — simple and so satisfying. Worth the “why not?”

Truck #9: Going Bananas
They were offering strawberry smoothies. I tapped out. So did Stacey. Too full, too cold, too…done.

After the tour, we warmed up with a glass of wine at BarRumba in the InterContinental with Stacey, Frank, and Adriana. A perfect ending to a surprisingly fantastic night.

I’ll admit, I had my doubts — but this was such a fun and different experience. A must-do for Bostonians this summer. Take a walk along the Greenway, enjoy the food, the parks, the art, and finish with a ride on the carousel (or a glass of Cab — your call).

Thanks to Stacey the Hand Model for joining me on this unexpected culinary adventure!
