I was recently invited to go and see Motown: The Musical by some professional contacts I have made through work. While these amazing women were not my friends, I feel that now we are bound by the joy of some of the greatest music ever made.
Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and many other talented musical artists of that era rejoiced us with memorable songs. I was transformed by Smokey’s lyrics and Diana’s mesmerizing voice, while I watched with glee as the story of the Motown independent label unfolds in the most delightfully entertaining way.

Berry Gordy, visionary behind the label started the Motown records back in late the 1950s with an upcoming star named Smokey Robinson, lead singer of the Miracles. With a back drop of the civil rights movements this musical takes you on an upbeat and infectious journey of this label. I could hardly sit in my seat every time I heard a record I forgot how much I loved from Baby Love, Stop in the Name of Love, I’ll be There, Good Morning Heartbreak and My Girl. With very little words, Motown: The Musical let’s just music tell the story.
There is nothing I didn’t love about every moment of this show. The actors (all of them) are so talented led by Clifton Oliver who plays Gordy and Allison Semmes who plays Diana and Nathaniel Xavier Cullors who plays young Michael, Stevie and Berry made you believe you were really listening to the original artists.
There is not much time to see this musical in Boston so I encourage you to get your tickets fast. This is a phenomenal show!
