We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

Richard Osman, famed author of the fabulous The Thursday Murder Club Series of books, has once again gifted us something very entertaining with We Solve Murders.

First off, when I finish a book, I look at reviews to see what others think. I was quite sad to see a lot of grumpy reviews. To me, this book isn’t here to revolutionize the mystery genre; it’s here to make you laugh, guess, and occasionally snort your coffee. It’s got a riotous ensemble cast that feels like they’ve all wandered in from entirely different—but equally entertaining—movies… AND, I do think this book would make a super fun movie!

There’s the wildly successful author with her own private island (because who doesn’t dream of that?), her bodyguard who’s dealing with a death threat while trying to keep things chill, and a former London cop whose survival instincts are firmly focused on locating the nearest restroom rather than the emergency exit. Add in a hilariously awful action star with a megalomaniac streak, and to top it all off, a protagonist who uses ChatGPT to write emails in the style of a proper English gentleman. It’s like the Clue board game got a modern, snarky upgrade.

Sure, some parts of the book meander a bit, like me when I am wandering through a Nordstrom. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. It gives you time to bask in the silliness of the characters and their antics. It’s not just a murder mystery; it’s a comedy of manners, a satire of celebrity culture, and a cozy invitation to laugh at everyone’s quirks (especially your own) – I totally get Steve, the retired London cop 😂.

So, pour yourself a cup of tea—or something stronger—and dive in. It’s not a perfect masterpiece, but it is perfectly fun. And let’s face it, we could all use a little more fun these days.

I look forward to the next installment of these delightful books.
