About this Recipe
A Manhattan is probably one of the most famous cocktails globally and a cocktail I have learned to love over the years
bMy friends’ would order a Manhattan as a pre- or post-dinner drink, and I would always ask for a little taste. I honestly didn’t fully appreciate the allure of this cocktail, it was so strong and burned on the way down. Well, the more I tasted, the more I began to appreciate this smooth, warming, sipping drink. Now, it is a weekend treat in the cold winter months when I want to curl up on the sofa with a big throw over me while watching a movie. I wont admit to some of the silly movies I watch, but I can share they are always better with a Manhattan !
Ingredients
- 2 parts whiskey
- 1 part sweet vermouth
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Garnish: maraschino cherry – while pricey, Luxardo are the best!
Similar to many origin cocktail stories, the Manhattan has a number of them. Invented by Iain Marshall for a dinner hosted by Winston Churchill’s mother for the presidential candidate, Samuel J Tilden is probably the most popular. I do like the British component to this story.
Step by Step Instructions
- Add the whisky, sweet vermouth and both bitters to a mixing glass with ice, and stir until well-chilled
- If you like it a little on the sweet side, add a tiny drop of juice from the cherries
- Strain into a chilled coupe
- Garnish with a Maraschino cherry
