For me this holiday break was a much needed complete unwind from work.  I indulged in seeing my friends, having great dinners, enjoying wonderful wine and going to get bed early every night.  I even threw in a workout here and there.  Not too many though as I didn’t want to overdo it 🙂

I was having dinner with Erika and we were trying to come up with somewhere we hadn’t been in a while and B&G Oysters popped into my head.  While almost always impossible to get a reservation, I did manage to get one that evening for a 7.30pm dinner.  Perfect!

Prior to dinner, we stopped by the always friendly and relaxing Butcher Shop for a glass of their featured wine, a little Papa Godello and a small charcuterie plate.

After wine, we walked the 20 steps to B&G, which is another restaurant owned by the fabulous Barbara Lynch.  Even during the quiet holiday week this place was busy with every table and bar seat filled.  I had forgotten how small, retro and very cool this place is.

After ordering another glass of wine for dinner, my plan was to just have an entrée dish as we had already had a little bit of food.  Of course, once I looked at the menu that thought was completely out of the window.  We started with their daily special of fresh oysters – my favorite being the PEI Skinny Sea.

We also could not resist the fried oysters with a housemade tartar sauce.  These are irresistibly awesome!

Prior to our entrées we placed an order of the crunchy, scrumptious Brussels Sprouts with just a little hint of lemony tang to snack on.  And why not?  It would seem the evening was one of nonstop eating!

For my entrée I was struggling to decide as I wanted every fish dish on the menu.  In the end I ordered the Swordfish au Poivre, a wonderfully lighter than normal tasting swordfish with sweet potato and a crisp bite of bitter broccolini.

Erika picked the Blue Cod with a creamy parsnip puree and sweet root vegetables, which she said was excellent.

While I was done with food, Erika can never resist dessert.  She ordered the pot of rich chocolate mousse with crunches of teeth sticking heath bar and a hit of sea salt.  I do enjoy the salt and chocolate combo so of course, I did try and could see why she was momentarily speechless.  It’s that good!

Our evening was indulgently excellent from beginning to end from wine at The Butcher’s Shop to dessert at B&G.

B&G has still what it takes!
