I met Barbara at one of my favorite places for brunch on Sunday. I was looking forward to sitting outside in the sun with a dress on and flip flops. Instead I had my jeans and raincoat on and we had to sit inside. What’s with the chilly June weather?
Our choice was Sonsie on Newbury Street. Sonsie has been around forever and it is a place that has always impressed me with its consistently good food.
Always welcoming and friendly staff that meet everyone with a smile and a “how are you today?” Barbara was waiting for me when I arrived and I was escorted over to meet her and immediately asked if I wanted a beverage while I looked at the menu. I ordered coffee and Barbara ordered tea. I wasn’t quite ready for a Mimosa.
I happen to think that Sonsie makes the best Eggs Benedict in the city so my mind was already made up with what I wanted. I did however add a little extra on to my dish with smoked salmon. Barbara chose the Frittata – cauliflower, spicy sausage, ricotta, parsley, potatoes.
After we ordered our brunch, our very courteous and smiley waitress brought over their signature complimentary bread basket and a coffee refill for me. I was very excited as I love their fruit bread with soft sweet icing on top. It is so fresh and delicious that you can be tempted to eat the whole basket, which would be bad as you will not be able to eat your actual ordered dish… as we found out. Neither of us could finish our plates.
My Eggs Benedict was everything I wanted it to be. Perfectly poached eggs, just the right amount of yokey runniness and deliciously salty hollandaise sauce with a side of wonderful home fries. I was a happy and very full bruncher. Barbara was equally happy with her choice of dish.
Sonsie is a great place for cocktails after work, dinner with your colleagues, a first date and of course brunch… my favorite. They have super sidewalk seating where the floor to ceiling window/doors open up into the street so you can watch the Newbury Street passerbys,,, perfect for a balmy evening on a date if you cant get one J. If not, go with a friend and people watch.
Sonsie has a fun, vibrant atmosphere and even with all the new restaurants and bars opening in Boston it still draws a very loyal crowd.
